Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez Heading to the Boxing Hall of Fame

Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez are heading into the Hall of Fame. Boxing fans knew that this day would come and here it is. Joining Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez will be Kostya Tszyu, referee Joe Cortez, Mexican Trainer, Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain and Sylvester Stallone, for his contributions to the sport of boxing via his Rocky films. While many people are upset that Sylvester Stallone is in the Boxing Hall of Fame because he was just a boxer, I must admit that he was an ambassador to the sport of Boxing with his Rocky movies.

Mike Tyson, (50-6-2, 44 KOs) is perhaps the world’s best heavyweight boxer in the history of the sport. He won his first 19 fights by knocking out his opponents. 12 of those came in the first round. There was no one better than Mike Tyson during his prime. Mike Tyson was electrifying. His raw power and devastating knockouts were unreal. Here you have a 5’10 guy fighting guys who were 6’4 or taller and just knocking them out with one punch. People can say what they want but no one can take away that Mike Tyson during the late 80s and early 90’s was one of the greatest boxers ever. Mike was honored for being elected to Boxing’s Hall of Fame. He went on to say, “the sport of boxing has given me so much, and it is truly a blessing to be acknowledged alongside other historical boxing legends because they paved the way for me, as I hope I have inspired others in this great sport.” 

Julio Cesar Chavez, (17-6-2, 88 KOs) is Mexico’s greatest boxer. There will never be another Julio Cesar Chavez. His fights against Meldrick Taylor, Hector Macho Camacho, Roger Mayweather, etc are classic. There is so much that can be written about Chavez but all I will say is that I was fortunate to see some of his fights. No one had a chin like Chavez. In his prime, he was just amazing. The losses that he had were past his prime. Julio Cesar Chavez will always be Mexico’s greatest boxer. After learning that he was inducted into Boxing’s Hall of Fame, Julio Cesar Chavez said, “I feel humble. At this moment in my life, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is very special. I feel great to know that my name will be inscribed with the best of the best, to join some of my heroes and to leave a mark for my family and my country.”

Kostya Tszyu, (31-2-25KOs with 1 no contest) was the undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion for a period of time. He was in some great battles.

Referee Joe Cortez is one of the best referee’s and I think he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Nacho Beristain is one of the world’s best trainers. He currently trains Juan Manuel Marquez.
