WBA Junior Middleweight Champion, Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29KOs) fought a very smart fight to retained his WBA belt by knocking out Ricardo Mayora (29-8-2, 23KOs) in the 12th round. From the opening rounds where Ricardo Mayorga was trying to get into Cotto’s head by forcing him to walk into the corner and brawl with him. Cotto being the discipline fighter that he is, avoided Mayorga’s mind games and kept focus on the task that’s at hand. Towards the middle rounds where they went toe to toe, it brought the people to its feet. The thing about Mayorga was that he would land some good shots and then back away and not throw any punches until the end of the round. I think the lack of following up on his punches and not putting constant pressure on Cotto, prevented him winning last night’s fight.

Ricardo Mayorga did impressed me in the sense that I saw a more discipline boxer in Mayorga. That is, discipline, in the Mayorga type of way. Which is, not going crazy and throwing punches the whole 12th rounds. Mayorga to me looked like he was being selective with his punches. He tried to find an opening and sneak a punch. For Mayorga to box in some of those rounds says a lot about him. Ricardo appeared to lose of a lot of energy from yelling at Cotto and inviting him to a slugfest by the ropes. Mayorga did landed some heave shots on Cotto and he was able to handle Mayorga’s punches. With yesterday’s loss, Ricardo Mayorga announced his retirement from Boxing. I guess we have to wait for it to become official. If Ricardo was in better condition, shut his mouth and had a trainer that would teach him some technicality and improve his defense, Mayorga would be one great fighter.

With Cotto winning it sets the stage for a rematch between Cotto vs Margarito in the summer. Miguel Cotto looked pretty sharp last night. You can tell the improvement that Emanuel Steward has done on Cotto. Margarito would have to make some adjustment to face the new and improve Miguel Cotto. Let’s hope that the fight will be in Las Vegas rather the New Jersey. If the fight is in the East Coast then I am assuming they are going to try to find a venure that will be around the time of the Puerto Rican Parade. It would make sense to me. Let’s see what Arum is thinking.
