Yesterday, Obama visited the tomb of Mons.Oscar A. Romero in El Salvador before concluding his Latin America Trip. This was clearly a Photo Op and nothing else. As someone who admires Mons. Oscar Romero, I find his visit to Romero’s tomb to be very troubling given that Obama could have used the opportunity to 1) apologized to the Salvadoran people for the U.S. role in the 12 year civil war that killed more than 75,000 people and 2) bring attention to the closure of the School of Americas. Obama stated that Romero was an “inspiration.” If Obama is “inspired” by Mons. Oscar Romero he can close the School of Americas (Assassins) aka the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC), which trained the soldiers that assassinated Mons. Oscar Romero. There is no better way for Obama to show his “inspiration” than by closing a terrorist school that continues to be financed by our tax dollars.
