Today is Wangari Maathai’s 71st Birthday. For those that don’t know, Wangari Maathai became the first African women to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 “for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” Maathai is the founder of the Green Belt Movement, which brings awareness to the conservation of the environment by planting trees. It is also an organization that advocates on behalf of women’s rights.
There was a documentary made on Maathai and the Green Belt Movement called, Taking Root. I saw it a couple of years ago and it was a very inspiring documentary. Below are clips from the documentary.
