Tonight’s fight between IBF, IBO and WBO Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs) vs WBA Heavyweight Champion David Haye(25-1, 23KOs) is by far the biggest heavyweight fight in years. The heavyweight division has been a very boring division in my opinion with the Klitschko brothers dominating the division and not having anyone that poses a threat to them. That might change tonight with David Haye. Yesterday at the weigh in, David Haye weighed in at 212.3 lbs and Wladimir Klitschko weighed in at 242.5 lbs. Throughout the build up of this fight, David Haye has tried and successfully played the psychological games on Klitschko. And Friday’s weigh in was no different.
The key in the fight will be round 1. The first round will dictate how the fight will be. Will it be an all out war or will Klitschko set the pace with his jab and out jab Haye for the whole fight. I think David Haye is going to come out swinging in the first round. I don’t think he wants to get Klitschko get too comfortable. The pressure is on Haye. After all that talking will he be able to back it up. He definately has something to prove. The question is can he prove it by being a smart aggressive fighter. If he does not use his ring intelligence and just comes out trying to knockout Klitschko out, he is going to be the one that will be knocked out.
I expect Klitschko to be calm but aggressive. He will use his jabs to keep Haye away from him but also land couple of combinations to the body and upstairs. Klitschko will take advantage of any opening he sees. Haye has gotten into his skin that he is determined to knock Haye out. The difference is that I don’t see Klitschko being distracted and focusing only on knocking out Haye. On the other hand, it appears that is the only plan Haye has.
Aside from the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, this fight is the biggest boxing fight that fans have been waiting to see. We will see how it all turns out tonight. Part of me wants Haye to win so the heavyweight division will be something other than the Klitschko brothers. But, I also want Klitschko to win because of how he has composed himself during the build up of this fight. He has demonstrated sportmanship and world class. If I have to pick a winner, I am going to Wladimir Klitschko to win by a knockout somewhere between rounds 8-10. I think Klitschko jabs and power punches will be too much for Haye. The fight may end earlier but we will see. Regardless of who wins, I hope boxing fans will be treated to a great fight.
