Last night was one of the most amazing games that I have played in! Our softball team, Los Pistoleros, were down 23-16 to the Cerveceros heading into our final at bat when we scored 14 runs in the top of the 6th inning to take a 30-23 lead. Our defense played great in the bottom of the 6th inning to stop the Cerveceros from rallying back. To be down by 7 runs and win by 7, is the most awesome way to win the championship game!
We started the game great and jumped to a huge 10-1 lead in the top of the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 1st, I had a ball that was hit way over my head in left field. As soon as the ball was hit, I started sprinting towards the ball and pulled my left hamstring. I had injured that same hamstring earlier in the season and kept me out of play for about four games. Tonight’s injury made me sit out the remainder of the game. The great thing about softball is that I would not lose my place in the batting order.
After building a huge lead for the first couple of innings, Los Cerveceros came back from a 16-7 deficit to take a 23-16 lead heading into the 6th inning. It was at that moment that I tried pumping up my teammates. For those that know me, I am one of the most passionate guys to play the game. I am loud and get into the game! One thing about me is that I never lose hope even when the game seems out of reach. I believe in the power of the human spirit. I rather lose knowing that we gave it our best and in the process had a great time rather than giving up.
When we started our final at bats, there was the belief in me that we can at least tie the game. Our first batter in the 6th inning set the stage for us by getting on base. Then the following batter got a hit and before you know it we start scoring runs and more runs. It was an inning where all of us were hitting the ball. A couple of my teammates hit clutch home runs in that inning. When I went to bat, I was just trying to keep the inning alive. I hit the ball that went over the right fielder’s head. If I was healthy, I would’ve had an easy homerun. Instead, I hopped with one leg all the way to third base! After my triple, we ended scoring a couple more runs. I am still shock that we score 14 runs in the top of the 6th inning!
There is something special when you play softball with a great group of guys. I love my teammates! Last night’s championship game was a testament to the great team we have. All season long we have been there for one another.
I want to thank my teammates for embracing my craziness and allowing me to play softball with so much passion and intensity.
I am still happy over last night’s win! Feels good to win a game with a 14 run inning! Pasadena Softball Champions, BABY!!!
I can’t wait til February, 2012 when we get our customized championship t-shirts!
