Remembering Dom Helder Camara aka Brazil’s Archbishop of the Poor

Dom Helder Camara The Spiral Of Violence by Dom Helder Camara

Today is Archbishop Dom Helder Camara’s birthday. He would have been 103 years old today. He became famous when he was quoted, “When I give food to the poor they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” He was known as the archbishop of the poor in Brazil. Dom Helder was a bishop dedicated to building the kingdom “on earth as it is heaven.” He walk, advocated and embrace Brazil’s most marginalized.

He wrote an amazing book, Spiral of Violence, where he discusses his 3 levels of violence and ends his book with an appeal to the youth. In his last words to the youth, he writes, “This is my appeal. Bring me your warmth and your friendship. With you I must remain young in soul, keep the hope and love I need to help all men, our brothers.”

For those who are interested in reading Dom H. Camara’s book, Spiral of Violence, you can find it at this link: http://www.alastairmcintosh.com/general/spiral-of-violence.htm

Here are some quotes by Dom Helder Camara that I like:
1. “If there is some corner of the world which has remained peaceful, but with a peace based on injustices the peace of a swamp with rotten matter fermenting in its depths – we may be sure that that peace is false. Violence attracts violence. Let us repeat fearlessly and ceaselessly: injustices bring revolt, either from the oppressed or from the young, determined to fight for a more just and more human world.”
2. “Without justice and love, peace will always be a great illusion.”
3. “In the Father’s house we shall meet Buddhists and Jews, Muslims and Protestants – even a few Catholics too, I dare say …We should be more humble about people who, even if they have never heard of the name of Jesus Christ, may well be more Christian than we are.”
4. “When we are dreaming alone it is only a dream. When we are dreaming with others, it is the beginning of reality.”
5. “Keep your language. Love its sounds, its modulation, its rhythm. But try to march together with men of different languages, remote from your own, who wish like you for a more just and human world.”

The videos are in Portuguese but it helps if you understand Spanish to follow Camara’s prayer and people’s thoughts on him.

Dom Helder Camara…PRESENTE!!!
AHORA…Y…SIEMPRE!!!
