Remembering the East L.A. Walkouts of 1968 with this great documentary–Taking Back The Schools

On March 6, 1968, students from East L.A. High Schools walked out to protest the lack of attention that the LAUSD was putting in the issues affecting high school Chicanos. Students wanted the school board members to pay attention to their demands of a better quality of education for all Chicanos.

The walkouts of March 6th sparked the consciousness of not only high school Chicanos but the community as a whole. PBS put out this great documentary, CHICANO! Taking Back The Schools and one can see how the walkouts of 1968 play a huge role in the lives of several high school students and how students supported Sal Castro, a beloved high school teacher who supported the students in the walkouts. The documentary also shows how the FBI and sheriffs infiltrated a lot of student groups especially the Brown Berets. I recommend this great documentary for those interested in education and especially high school teachers.

See this great documentary and feel free to share it with others who may find it useful.
