Saturday’s fight at the MGM Grand Arena of Las Vegas had all the ingredients of a big fight. It had Floyd Mayweather, the undefeated veteran vs Canelo Alvarez, the undefeated young champion who was not only defending his belts but was looking to be the first boxer to hand Mayweather his first loss. What the fight also had, was the same result when Mayweather fights and that is a convincingly victory. Floyd Mayweather gave Saul Canelo Alvarez a boxing clinic as he cruised to a Majority Decision. Since the fight was being billed as THE ONE, it was only fitting to find a judge that would stand out with their shocking card of 114-114. Unfortunately, “THE ONE,” judge who scored this fight a draw was also the same judge that gave Timothy Bradley the victory over Manny Pacquiao. The other judges had the fight 117-111 and 116-112. I had the fight 116-112.
In my pre fight analysis, I mentioned that if Mayweather cruises through the first 5 rounds then this fight will be a disappointment and it won’t live up to its hype and will become another convincingly Mayweather victory. And that is what we got. Canelo simply did not have an answer to Floyd’s speed and quick reflexes. I felt that when Canelo was thinking, Floyd was hitting him. To fight a fighter like Floyd, I think one has to throw punches in bunches. Let’s say of the 10 punches that you throw, if 4 connect and out of those 4, 2 end up hurting him. I call that success. Its better than throwing 1 or 2 punches and missing only to be countered by the same amount of punches one threw.
Mayweather’s experience, footwork, reflexes, defense and speed were too much for Canelo. Floyd Mayweather is simply the best boxer of our generation! Probably the best boxer in the history of the sport. Mayweather is in the Major Leagues while every other boxer is in Rookie Ball. They haven’t even made it to Single-A. That is how good Mayweather is. He is just on a league of his own.
Canelo is still young enough to have a bright future. Their are some interesting fights for him. Canelo can fight Carlos Molina, who beat Ishe Smith to win the IBF super welterweight belt. If Cotto beats Rodriguez in October, a Canelo vs Cotto fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend for next year could be in the works. We’ll see what direction Team Canelo decides to go.
As much as boxing fans wanted this fight to happen this past weekend, I wonder what would have happened if Team Canelo would have strategically called out Mayweather in 2015 when he would be in his last two fights of his 6 fight deal with Showtime. What would have happened had Canelo gained two more years of experience? Mayweather would have been 38 years old and Canelo 25. Maybe, Canelo’s chances would have been greater had he fought an aging Mayweather.
As for Mayweather, there is no competition out there. Boxing fans would still want to see a Mayweather vs Pacquiao clash. So do I. But, I don’t see that happening. Not because Mayweather does his business through Golden Boy and Pacquiao is a Top Rank fighter. I don’t see it happening because Bob Arum won’t make it happen. We all know that Floyd and Manny want to fight each other. I think Arum knows that Pacquiao possesses the quickness and the offensive traits, but he lacks the defensive skills to beat Floyd. If Mayweather were to fight Pacquiao, I not only see Mayweather winning but he may end up knocking Pacquiao ala Hatton style.
There is no one in the welterweight division that can give Mayweather problems. Part of me still wants to see a rematch between Mayweather vs Ortiz simply because of the way it ended. I would want to see what would have happened as the fight went on. The names that people will be throwing out for Floyd’s next will fight will be Danny Garcia, the winner of Alexander/Khan, Sergio Martinez, and GGG. If Mayweather decides to come back down to 147 then it is safe to say that Mayweather vs Garcia will be meeting up to fight each other next year during Cinco de Mayo weekend.
